i don't believe it will charge you each message since it's using data.
You need a data plan for msn live app. Sms is different from data.

Not always.. Yahoo uses SMS Messages and you will get charged if you go over your limit. I have unlimited family so I don't have this problem. Do not assume that your Yahoo, MSN or other im client uses data only!
