This page is also warning me that I'll need to activate my device so that I can continue to send/receive messages...
That's fine. The device actually registers itself with the network immediately after updating itself. You shouldn't have to do anything. And if you do, it's three clicks and takes 5 seconds.
People like me that are obsessed with our Storms do this multiple times each week. I promise you it's okay.
It's now working thru the process of updating my device...
Nice, congrats on taking the plunge. Updating takes 10-20 minutes, though some people say 30. I've never seen 30, haha.
It's tempting to click the screen, since the phone is going to cycle on and off a couple of times. Just let it sit there. The very last step in this update process is restoring all your applications and data, so be patient! But you're done now... It's all on the phone.
I think I have a problem... the wizard is frozen at "connect to device". The screen on my storm has gone white and, in tiny letters, it says "app error 523" and, below that, "reset".
Battery back in... didn't wait a full minute but it booted up and appears to be working properly... do I start the application loader again?
Okay Dave, here is the thing. Blackberries are prone to the "523 app error", which can be a real *****. Sometimes, like in your case, just resetting the phone fixes it no problem. In some cases, you have to completely reinstall the OS.
In any case, it is fixable. Chances are, if you run the Loader again, you WON'T have that problem again.
If you want to do this again, I'm more than willing to help you. Like I said, nothing will happen that we can't fix.
******* awesome, I'm glad it's going smoothly for you, too. The first time I tried it myself, I messed up pretty badly haha.
You shouldn't have to do anything to send/receive messages. The phone should register itself. If not, it's literally four clicks, te "re-register" with the network and send your service books.
Also, the last "initializing device" phase takes the longest. And then it will automatically restore all your apps and contacts and all the backed up stuff.
