The native calendar for the BB is pretty sucky-does anyone have a particular rec for a good third party calendar app? gracias

No recommendations as I haven't really tried any. Might want to look at Agendus or Pocket Informant as they are offering BB calendar apps now. PocketDay is also another option, although I really don't think it offers much more in the calendar department than the stock app.

I would also like to know if there is a better Calendar app. Any that will sync with Outlook or Google?

The bold syncs perfectly with Outlook for me, its a massive strength of the Bold and I benefit from it on an almost hourly basis!
