    my phone wanted me to update blackberry app world so i did. When i run it. it comes up with notice " The data service not operational.". it wont let me open app world.

    Try to set your data services OFF then ON again
    Go to home main scree - manage connections - mobile networks option - data services

    I always do this to trigger back data connection back to active..
