hi basically ive got my blackberry bold on O2 UK. ive been looking for apps that work in the uk. there is a VERY limited amount on bbapps. Does anyone know where i can get some good free apps for my blackberry bold which work in the UK.

What kind of apps do you mean? Most things, other than stuff like local search, should work regardless of where you are

I agree, a lot of what is on App World is rubbish for a UK Bold (think most of the radio apps, pageonce doesn't work with UK accounts, many of the news services!). I have Google maps (works well), Viigo (not bad UK integration e.g. premiership football (or soccer as they like to call it) and restaurant booking, weather and cinema listings) and apps like facebook and socialscope for social networking which works anywhere. Any other good UK apps I'd like to hear about too.

I live in the UK and am seriously considering upgrading to a BB Bold through 02.
Would you still advice me to do this, even though a lot of the apps do not work in the UK?
Also, how has it worked for you with 02's fair usage policy on internet and email use?

I'm on O2-UK too... The bold has worked great for me ... I have confirmed with a guy who works in my local O2 store that "Unlimited Internet" is unlimited. ie, there is no cap at any point and you will not get charged for excessive use!

What apps you need? any specific ones??

I know that a lot of the radio apps are US based for licensing reasons but, as ST79's list shows, loads do. In temrs of radio Flycast UK is great, and whilst I'd love to try Slacker Flycast does give loads of musical choice to explore. Plenty of the GPs aps work, most games are net based and work too. Not sure about, for example, MLB Gameday, but lets face it there's hardly going to be huge demand for a baseball app in the UK anyway. So I suppose I'm trying to say that there are LOADS of apps that do work for the UK, so if I were you Elduque1964 I'd go for the Bold and not worry about the naysayers (although I can't offer any comment on the O2 element of your question).

Actually good thing someone posted this thread up as im looking for an app or apps...free of course that would give me restaurant bookings and cinema listing here in the UK.

So does anyone know of any apps that would work in the UK that would give me listing for UK cinemas and restaurants etc.

Cheers ST79 ive tried viigo and didnt like it one bit...i found that it killed my memory pretty badly and battery drainage was a problem.

Maybe it was because i didnt set it up properly but i might re-download it and give it another go.

Depends what you want the phone to do for you. For regular BlackBerry functions it is truly unbeatable. If you only want it as a status symbol it's not bad. If you want it mostly for Free Apps and don't need BB functionality then also look at the toy^H^H^H iPhone.

I have viigo and never experienced any memory / battery problems. Set it up like:

Automatic Updates - NO / OFF
Save on exit - NO / OFF
Move to background on close - NO / OFF

You will not have any problems if you set viigo like this...

The way I see it. I am going to have to enter a 18-24 month contract.
I want a phone that will last the pace and also be able to be updated constantly.
I had a feeling, the [I]h....[/I]i-phone... excure me, would lose its status and appeal a lot sooner over this period compared to BB.

I used to use a WM device but got a Bold about six months back. I'm on Vodafone UK but I can strongly recommend a BB device and a Bold in particular. As to Apps that work in the UK - in fairness most of the Apps work, it's just a question of whether the content is relevant to the UK audience. Personally I thought that Flycast UK was terrible and deleted it after about a day. There are not many UK based radio stations available (I would really like access to live BBC stations on my device). Having said that it works okay. I would not go back to a WM device now and whilst the iPhone is not a bad device a BB is a better device for actually getting things done and having effective push applications. Just my opinion but like Branta said it depends what you want to use your phone for. I think the Bold is a great device for work and leisure.

I agree that it would be great if the Beeb would set their stations up to stream to Blackberries (or if RIM would enable it, whoever's responsible), but I'd be realy interested to hear what you found so bad about Flycast UK. It's worked flawlessly for me since I first installed it and I've only ever had about 2 or 3 buffering issues.

That was kind of my point - it works well but I found the content was not really what I wanted and does not feature many major UK based stations. There is nothing wrong with the software per se but I thought I was going to be able to access more of the content that I wanted. I felt a bit cheated that it called itself a UK version - probably a case of me expecting too much.

Ahh right. No, it's more about content on specialised channels than known stations I suppose, more internet radio than traditonal wireless/ analogue. On that basis it's not good, but if you just want loads of music from a specific genre without caring who provides it, then it's great imo - I can manage without inane dj chat so just streamed rock music suits me fine.

Hey to the UK users, new to Blackberry myself having got my Bold in January. I love the fact I still love playing with it now!
I'm on O2 UK and there is a fair usage policy on BB Unlimited but its doubtful you'd ever go over this.
Apps I've got include
Google Maps
Trapster-speed camera alerts, updated by users, very good and works really well
Got-2-a task manager with location based alerts, a god send for me as I'm very forgetful =P
CB launcher
Facebook
Twitterberry
Amaze gps-free sat nav with voice instructions, bit clunky but very good for free
SmrtGuard-backup software with security features such as BB tracker and remote delete
Google sync

You don't have to worry about it. There is enough memory space left for you to install your favourite applications. I have about 12 3rd party applications, 4 themes and 2 games installed. I will get about 46MB after a battery pull and memory settles between 33 - 36 MB....

Its all about how you use the device. Remember to close the applications properly after use to save memory and battery life.

One guy told me, he had about 20 3rd party apps install, with no memory problems whatsover.

like stated above what i really want is apps that work well in the uk but also appeal to the UK audience. As people have said, how much of the UK public is interested in baseball. most of the apps do work in the UK however not to their full potential - unless if they were produced for the uk bb then they would work fine for example the Gokivo Navigator which works good but does not find all the roads in the uk. Im not saying it has to be as good as a tomtom but if it was produced for the uk audience then i feel it would work better. if u understand what im trying to say then u knw what i really want from the bb apps. but for now ill have to keep on seraching for some good apps.

I wonder... I've checked around and i found on net that O2's unlimited net is incl WAP but some say no. Do you know bout it? And either yes or no, is that contract straight to O2 only or thru phone comp too? Cheers
