I guess this is another noob question but when I open up the app switcher there is always 5 programs up, whether I closed it or not. This is probably normal, but do these programs use any memory being in the switcher? Thanks.

Those apps are always open, and yes, they do take some device memory. There isn't much you can do about it, other than to make sure that your file free memory doesn't get too low.
