App to backup to SD card
Ok, Googlesync sucks. I hate it. What I want to know is why no one has developed an app to backup contacts, calendar, alarms etc to the SD card.
I backup my device via desktop regularly, so at most I would loose a week or two of data. However my concern is the IF, on that very odd occasion that my device has a fit and needs a hard reset when I am days, or even just hours from my lap top, then what ? Googlesync....but I hate it. Infact I am taking it off my device as soon as I finish typing this.
Does anyone know of any plans for an app in the future ? Is the likelyhood of a crash so minute that it's not worth the effort ?
There were multiple apps like this for windows mobile devices...mind you I needed it almost monthly!!!
Just curious and kinda ranting a bit too.

we can only hope. this is an issue people have been talking about forever

Been keeping an eye out for a backup app like this for ages, but sadly nothing yet. Perhaps like the app installation issue, its not possible due to hardware or firmware requirements set by RIM?

Maybe? There must be a reason, obviously lots of us want this ability. Fingers crossed. Mind you my BB has never had an issue that wasn't solved by a battery pull, and those only a result of third party apps.

My guess for the reason why not is security. Anyone could take that card out and view all your personal information. It's much safer being in the device, and a in backup file on a computer. The user has better control on what can be accessed.
I back up every day or two, so I have no need for an app like this. My 16GB card is about full too.

OP,
why not use best buy's service for backing up your data?
To me, as long as my calendar and contacts can be restored, the rest can wait a day or so.

thats all I care about is contacts and calendar. I back up regularly, I am worried about what happens when I travel without my laptop. ie, just spent a week away from home and did not take the laptop. If for some reason by device crashed and needed a complete reset I would have been screwed.
as for security I see no reason why a backup program couldn't require a password to restore.
I think the biggest problem from what I have read is the inability to load an app the will run from the card. Reset the device the app needed would be gone anyway.
Thats why I am surprised security minded RIM hasn't developed a native app.

In the olden days when I used a Treo, there were a couple of third-party apps available that would backup the entire device (or you could set it to selectively backup certain things). You could set it to do the backup automatically whenever you wanted - such as in the middle of the night.
So if your device gets wiped, you run the app and all of your stuff is restored just the way you had it in a couple of minutes.
You could set it to be password-protected so a password had to be entered prior to restoring the data.
I've been using a blackberry for several years now, and am still amazed that there isn't an app like that available.
