Hot Key Manager offers a free trial. Try it first would be my suggestion.
however, i use QuickLaunch with my non touchscreen 9700 and i can say that although it was originally designed for the storm, it works perfect for my 8900 and 9700 and it is a must have app on my Blackberry. Many themes offer QuickLaunch support by adding it to the space bar hot key.
I have not used Hot key manager so i can not speak on that. But i can speak for Quicklaunch and it being "better suited for the Storm" is inaccurate if you ask me. Storm users can NOT use apps like Hot Hey Manager as it does not have keys but QuickLaunch works for all supported devices the same.

I use SuperQWERTY. Don't know how I did without it before. It has a trial period. I don't know how it compares to the other apps listed here--I never tried those.
I must be dumb cause I can't figure out how to use HKM. I downloaded the trial btw.
I've setup the program to have g to open Google Maps and v to open video recorder. At home screen I press g and nothing happens. I press v and it get Saved Messages area. WTF?
