I have a couple of 3rd party apps such as FXConverter, BBtrans and Google Mail. However for the past week these apps are not recognising the data connection on my phone. Apps such as facebook, MSN messenger and google talk work fine. Any ideas why this is happening?

You'll have to go to Options -> Advanced Options -> TCP/IP
    Enable APN Settings
and set the APN to etisalat.ae

not sure how etisalat handles this traffic, but i'm almost sure you'll be charged for whatever goes through this APN.
anyway, you can enable it and check to see if your apps now work.. so you know that's the culprit

When that happens to me i just go to application permissions and allow the connection and that always does the trick for me.

If you are still having trouble, try sending your service books
