SD Maid which has been around forever. The free version is enough but throw the dev some bucks for the Pro.

What exactly does a cleaner app do and how necessary/helpful is it?

most people don't need it for functional reasons. Sometimes it can be helpful if you are experiencing slow downs. I run SD maid prior to large OS updates kinda like spring cleaning. You can save some space by getting rid of temp files, corpse files - files left behind after app uninstalls, cache files .

Google files or SD Maid both work fine on my motion.

Blackberrys don't need them. They've got enough baked in security, both software and hardware to make cleaners, and antivirus software redundant, and simply a waste of memory and battery.

That's not accurate at all. That's like saying you don't need to clean up files on your computer because you have an antivirus installed. With every app installed / removed, there is stray files and folders left all over your device that take up space. On any given day I clean up to 2-3GB of just plain junk off my device that is not really needed.
