My weakness is still for high-end engineering PCs. I'm looking forward to dropping almost $6,000 on a laptop! The difference is that that device will pay for itself in about 18 months.

WOWZERS! A little too rich for my blood. Yeah if you can recoup the costs relatively quickly then the expense is justified. Another bonus you should be guaranteed support for much longer than 1-3 years unlike most smartphones.

On site warranty for three. Software and drivers for about five typically, but I'll sell it in two years, getting 60% if the purchase price with one year left on the warranty transferring to the new owner.

    Rinse and repeat.

So my PC budget is about $100/mo. When all is said and done.

I liked this review a lot . It was positive and balanced. So, very good phone bit over priced but you get the BlackBerry name and the camera should be better. I'd disagree about BBM being good at security updates, it's not true, but that's positive news for unwitting potential buyers.
I'm getting positive vibes for BBM for 2018. If they "fix" the camera issue and tweak it plus offer some new editions, I think it'll do well.

Good article - and he's right - the bottom will drop out of the high-end smartphone market as good specs become standard among lower-priced kit

sadly he's also right about the camera ...
