I transferred files on both bands to and from my PC sitting 5 feet away from that fancy Netgear router and I have never seen speeds above 27Mbps on either. In fact the 5GHZ often craps out for whatever reason.
Either that fancy router is garbage or the Z10 is, or both. I have never seen anything near the theoretical speeds that are supposed to be possible.

With cheap TP Link router, at 2.4 I get about 2-5MB/sec while I get about 10-12MB on 5ghz

I have it on my Z10, and I do consider it overrated in my experience. I purposely do not use the 5GHZ band.

This is a huge difference.

With Speed Tester, I get 21.66 Mb/s on 2.4 GHz and 24.38 Mb/s on 5 GHz. Not much difference.

I do notice that 2.4 GHz does travel farther, as when coming home, the phone locks onto the 2.4 GHz band before the 5 GHz one.

It's getting better and better and I can't believe people can justify that a wireless device not having 5ghz support in 2015 and still expect people to buy that device for more money instead of better Z30.

Leap was less than half the price of Z30 at launch here in the UK and is still around �40 less than Z30 during the fire sale of old stock. My wife has a Leap and loves it. She came from a Galaxy S3 but doesn't run many apps and she LOVES the Hub. She couldn't give two s***s about 5GHz Wi-Fi.

I've also disabled 5 GHz Wi-Fi on my router. It was just too problematic with all devices. Ever since I disabled it, I haven't had any issues.

5Ghz should really be used for high throughput close-proximity connections. Things like connecting to your Smart TV, Roku, NAS, or media intensive desktop. The more you can off load those types of "fixed location devices" onto the 5Ghz band, the less crowded the 2.4Ghz bands will be for mobile devices that need a more reliably/consistent range/coverage (and are often less demanding on bandwidth).

So from a practical standpoint, the Leap (a spartan, work-focused, budget device) not having 5Ghz is not as 'ridiculous' as the OP makes it seem.

The advantage depends on your environment. Some people will not see any improvement, but in an environment where many people are competing for the same bandwidth, the ability to switch to 5GHz, can be valuable.

In a mixed environment I found 5 ghz just not as useful as I wished. The 2.4 ghz channels tend to be much stronger signals with greater flexibility.

5 GHz has much greater bandwidth, fewer users on 5 GHz, and therefore less congestion. 802.11ac now will provide greater data rate.

Only downside is...if you absolutely are at the fringe of Wi-Fi coverage, 2.4 may be a bit better. But only for that situation.

As Animal said above, 5GHz support is nice for environments with tons of AP�S and dense clients over short distances as there's many more channels to use, like in a sports stadium.

At home, less benefits unless you have really strong signals.

Please read this again, as it is 100% correct!

Not putting 5GHz in the Leap is a very straightforward and sensible trade-off. Not putting 5GHz into a media streamer (AppleTV, Roku, ChromeCast, etc.) or some other fixed, media-heavy device that isn't likely (or capable) of having a wired connection - now THAT would be stupid. But that's not the issue here. BB made the right choice this time, if something needed to go to maintain their budget.
