During one of the MWC interviews I remember John Chen telling the reporter that Blackberry (Winstron) is building the Leap. Seems strange that Foxconn would build the Z3 of which the Leap is loosely based on but not the Leap?? Also given the price of $275 you would think that margins would be better with a Foxconn build?

They're too busy building the Apple iWatch and keeping up with demand for iPhone 6 & 6+

Not sure if BlackBerry and Foxconn even still have an agreement. It could be null and void already.

I would doubt that. The Z3 has done well, selling 3.8-4million in the first year, and the Classic seems off to a good start, other than in the US

Maybe BlackBerry feels that they can make bigger margins by themselves, or are concerned with the security implications of outsourcing.

I don't recall every seeing or hearing numbers from the Z3 sales. Do you have anything you can show? I'd be interested to see this. My guess on Z3 sales was significantly lower.

there is no way they sold that many z3s. I would say they have only sold 12-13 million BB10 total and there is no way that 1/3 of that is the z3. the z10 is around 50% of the sales I think

Trying to find it. An analyst had mentioned in a report. A bearish analyst if I recall. Will keep looking.

Probably because BlackBerry already has most of the expensive components (basically left over from the Z10/Q10 production runs), and therefore doesn't need the component inventory risk hedging premium that the Foxconn agreement likely carries.

Or Foxconn is not convinced such an outdated device running BB10, and targeted to LTE markets, will sell at all, so its risk management team was unable to come up with anything decent for BlackBerry.

    12-13million BB10 devices, 50% Z10s, less than 30% Z3.

I think mostly a pot and kettle situation.

sales numbers obviously came from BB themselves but there was a thread asking devs to post their device breakdown numbers back in janurary and z10 was 45-50% if I recall while the z3 was well under 10%. Sorry just don't see close to 4 million z3s given the data above

Also it hasn't even been on sale a year yet. It was mid May I think.
