Nor is specs the only measure of whether a device is top-of-the-line. A well made, optimized OS will make a device fly even when the specs are low. That's the point. BB10 isn't iOS or Android. If it can do with lesser specs, who cares if the specs aren't the same as its competitors.

When the first 64-bit desktop CPU's came out, software was still 32-bits, which meant that the 64-bit processors had to emulate a 32-bit CPU. That resulted in 32-bit software running /slower/ than on a 32-bit processor. At this point, how many apps are 64-bit and what is their performance on a 64-bit mobile processor? The 64-bit may have benchmarked better, but what about real performance? If the experience parallels the desktop, then gigahertz do matter since a 32-bit will need to be emulated.
BB10 relies on an Android runtime heavily now, and more so likely when the Amazon deal kicks in. IOS is arguably way more optimized than Bb10 is. Bb10 is the worst based on the fact that the lowest it will run on is 1.5 GB of RAM, and 2 GB at launch. If BB10 were so greatly optimized, it would be on my PlayBook, but it isn't!

BB10 is a true multitasking OS. To run multiple apps, programs etc. at the same time requires more RAM. That's why.

If it's replacing the Z10 my guess is, it's a bigger and better Z10
If it is bigger than the Z10, I will stick with my Z10, and when it dies, I will go to an iPhone. As the saying goes: "Size does matter." Some of us really don't want to be carrying around a massive, desktop computer. We want a functional phone, that doesn't require a porter, to carry it. What is this fascination with "Mine is bigger than yours."?

I prefer the size of the z10. Maybe bb will start with a mini version of their top level phones. For example a z30 mini, screen size 4,3 specs the same as the z30.

I agree that specs are not the only thing. A well optimized OS is really important. That is why iOS can live with only 1 GB RAM and perform greatly. I still prefer BB 10 by the way.

And ask Qualcomm what they think about Apple hitting the 64 bit market in the first place... They did not like it at all.

Reduce the top and bottom bezels and make it 7mm wider to fit a 4.9" 1080p AMOLED screen.

64-bit 4+4 core, 4GiB RAM, 64GB built-in storage, microSDXC slot, bigger LiPo removable battery, water resistant, global LTE dual SIM, backlit camera sensor with pixel binning, few megapixels, OIS, lanyard loop

Next step: stereo camera and auto stereoscopic display

Yet it can't run Android apps minimized in the background properly.... Also their have been many posts here by people extremely familiar with the internal workings of the OS that have stated that the OS currently lacks memory management and that, not superior multitasking, is the reason for huge amounts of RAM needed. The other options out there multi task too, but they have memory management and can do it with less memory currently. The real beauty of BB10 is how the micro kernel architecture allows them to keep FIPS even while updating much of the OS as long as they don't touch the Neutrino micro kernel or the crypto kernel. The rest of BB10, the GUI and everything else that QNX never had, is still not optimized compared to the competition and they need to get a good memory management system in place.

It should have the same form factor as the Z10 but with better internals and an improved battery - that will be good for me!

Personally I dont think that a so called "Z10 successor" will be the Z3 LTE... Not everyone is interested in hitting the 5inch (Z30) screen territory and I would guess that BlackBerry would indeed make a Z10 replacement at the 4.2" form factor. I could be wrong, we'll see.

If it is the Z3, and they call it the Z20... ugh. It would be a phone that is perceived as inferior to the Z30 off the bat due to its naming and based on what we know about the Manitorba (Z3 LTE), inferior in specs. Unless it is dirt cheap (which I highly doubt since they failed to offer the Z3 at the $200 price point we were expecting in the APAC region) I think its very backwards making a "new" phone that is more outdated than a 1 year old phone...

As the Z10 has a higher resolution screen than the Z30, if this "Z20" is superior in every aspect to the Z30 except for screen size, it should be called the Z40.

Thank you for saying something relevant and frankly useful.

When you design a device, you need to think of the target audience. Not everyone wants to pay 700-800 dollars for a smartphone. Most people don't care about screen resolution or whether something is three milliseconds faster than another device. What they care about is whether the screen is of reasonable size, the battery life is good and if they can tuck the phone away in a pocket. And most of all, they only want to pay 400 dollars. Those will be the principals driving the Z20. And it doesn't change if you are a business either, they are also price sensitive. The days of everyone buying a 700 dollar phone are over. Get used to it.

I think calling the Z3 LTE the Z20 works mainly because the rumored specs place it above the Z10. It will probably be less likely that we see a full touch device from BlackBerry that's under 5 inches. The market worldwide is dictating that bigger is better that's why 5 inch phones have become the new 4 inch. Also keeping the amount of different screen sizes to a minimum is a good thing as well. With the help of Foxconn if the Z20 can deliver a price around 300 to 400 US dollars it will give business and regular consumers some options for a mid teer phone. My guess is that next year we will see a true successor to the Z30 for folks who want a high end full touch phone. In the mean time the Z20 will find a home with folks needing to replace there Z10's with a affordable alternative.

My opinion is the same that your. I have already expressed this wish. Let us imagine that that will come. A smartphone identical to Passport, but all-touch, will be made by the one who will go at the end of the reasoning that Blackberry holds (which presents us the advantages of the size of its Passport).

Here's a screenshot of the RAM allocation with 7 active frames (and the device monitor, OFC), followed by one with 0 active frames. With no apps running and a recently cleared hub with only 3 accounts syncing, the system still takes a GB. That's not optimization, to me.

The Z10 is the perfect size for true one handed use even more so than the Z30. They could fit a 4.5" screen in the Z10 form factor with upgraded hardware and have a winner.
