Just a guess, but I believe someone at TCL underestimated the demand.
No they didn't. They overestimated the difficulty in building the phones.

I'd guess that less than 20,000 K1s have been produced to date, given how few have made it to retailers. And they've had a variety of problems with that small number that have been serious enough that they're having to make attempts to solve them.

I'm not saying demand isn't higher than 20k - obviously it is - but it's not like they've sold 30 million and can't keep up.

New iPhones launch with in the neighborhood of 20M devices, and most of those get sold over the launch weekend. New Galaxy phones typically sell 10-12M in their launch weekend. TCL did their world-wide launch of the K1 with 700 phones at Selfridges in the UK. It's just a little different.

    Unlikely, and no.

Thanks for the explanation Troy. While it was just a guess on my part, I put more stock in your info than my speculation.

No, IMO, you shouldn't believe his words or anyone else's here, all are their own guesses and opinions and they were spoken out like facts from insiders. Ridiculous.

You underestimated yourself obviously or you are very modest. The way he gave out a number 20K sounds like a fact and that is what I meant it is ridiculous. If someone is knowledgeable in certain ways but gives out guesses as facts, I believe he is either not making sense or has some hidden agendas.

Maybe you didn't read the part where I wrote "I'd GUESS"? I'm hardly touting it as proven fact, or even pretending. But clearly it's a small number for a smartphone sold nearly worldwide and that has been on the market a couple of months.

This is a phone that LAUNCHED with 700 devices (confirmed by Selfridges) and where Amazon and Best Buy have both had reps that have admitted that they're only receiving dozens or hundreds at a time, despite having more on order. My guess is hardly out of left field given what we DO know.

I've read at least 3 people who have posted that the K1 has "sold at least a million devices by now", which is why I mentioned it at all. Things that wouldn't make sense if the K1 had actually sold 1M devices in the first two months make a whole lot more sense once you realize that the real number is likely around 20k.

No offense but if it's negative toward blackberry then you probably posted or parroted it. I don't even use blackberry and haven't for years but your bit has been pretty consistent for a long time now. You might be right but that's not the point. You're work is done once you spread the doubt.

You may be perceiving it as negative, but I'm just answering questions. Clearly, the "it's sold at least 1M" is patently false, but if it goes uncorrected, it quickly spreads and becomes "de facto truth" here. The truth is the truth, and, again, a lot of the other things that are going on (phones not being in stock, not launching on promised dates, etc.) make a lot more sense when approximate production numbers are understood.

I don't control TCL, or production volumes, or sales volumes, or which models work on which carriers, etc., but when people post incorrect information, I correct it, because the truth is always better than a falsehood in the long run.

If you can't handle that, then you're going to have a rough time online.

I don't think it's a question of handling it. I'm just calling it like I see it. The truth is none of us know the production or sales numbers. Maybe you can start there.

How can you tout that it's all about the truth, and then claim "... the real number is likely around 20k"? That's a classic contradiction. Regardless of how many reps have admitted to anything... and how many phones were provided to Selfridges... and how many forum posts there are... no official sales numbers of been released - period!

Now that I got that off my chest... and I'm being completely honest here... if I really had to put my money on a number... I think 20k sounds about right. 20k seems like enough to gauge interest in different sectors without losing too much bank if the phone doesn't sell. So... I'd guess around 20k too....but while leaving open the possibility I could be totally wrong.

No official sales numbers are EVER released. It's always been the case that the best we can do is guess. But when the guesses are mine - based on everything we know and the reality of the situation - and 1,000,000+, doesn't it make a bit more sense to share MY guess, rather than let someone's 1M guess stand?

I never claimed to have official numbers, and I always framed my guess as a GUESS - but it's an educated guess based on real (though certainly limited, incomplete, and sometimes anecdotal) data and a lot of experience paying close attention to the mobile market.

When BB10 launched, there were people predicting a minimum of 20M Z10s sold the first full quarter, and told me all about how I was being "negative" by estimating 5M. The real number was around 4.6M that quarter...
