An existential question: If Verizon has chosen to discontinue their CDMA network and move on to exclusively VoLTE and 4G LTE technology by 2019, what's the point of buying a CDMA Verizon phone if it's about to be obsolete?

I know others have asked if they can bring their GSM unlocked phones to Verizon, and the consensus on the forums is that you can't bring the GSM phone over to Verizon because Verizon is insisting on a CDMA phone. Very confused. If you want a BB KeyOne on the Verizon network in 2018, is Verizon really asking that you buy a Blackberry Verizon KeyOne that will be obsolete in 2019?

Verizon has a whitelist which, as of 08/28/2018, notes that only the BBB-103 KeyOne is a supported device, but is that a CDMA phone that is just being "grandfathered" into the list of supported devices, only to be dropped next year?

Older BB phones are already experiencing problems with the Verizon network, so it looks like there is only one choice: the KeyOne. Key2 isn't on Verizon's list of supported devices. I'd rather get a deal on a KeyOne anyway, so long as it's not obsolete next year.

It won't be obsolete next year. Verizon says they're shutting down their CDMA network at the end of 2019 and re-provisioning everything over to 4G LTE. That just means no more 3G or 1X coverage. The KeyOne will continue to work as normal on their 4G LTE only network.

KeyOne will become obsolete 3 years after release date (already a year down). The 1 promised major OS update is still rolling out. All that we'll have now are minor OS updates with security patches every 30 to 90 days for the next 2 years.

As Hostess said, Verizon is only decommissioning their CDMA radio service, which means only that portion of the Verizon KEYone would be rendered obsolete. The Verizon KEYone has an LTE radio chipset in addition to a CDMA chipset, so it bridges the gap between the old tech and Verizon's new network. The reason the KEYone still makes sense is because it works now, will work in 2020, and is authorized by Verizon to be on their network at all.

Since the GSM version of the KeyOne has both LTE radio and VoLTE for voice, is there any reason why Verizon shouldn't whitelist both the CDMA and GSM versions of the KeyOne? The CDMA network will be decommissioned. So far, Verizon has only whitelisted the CDMA version. The only reason I can think of would be that no one would buy the remaining CDMA KeyOne phones. But how many of them are out there anyway, since everyone is waiting for the KeyTwo to be available?

Verizon won't whitelist the GSM K1 because it doesn't have the CDMA radios it needs for its current service. Customer experience will be very poor on their network because they won't get the full coverage that Verizon offers.

If everywhere you went with your GSM K1 had poor to no service, while your friend who is also on Verizon had full service, I'm sure you'd be an upset customer too.
