I am curious to know what sort of adhesive is used to hold the back-plate, and the plastic trim on the top part of the phone

There is no glue on the back plate. The only glue you will find on the plastic trim on the top is under the little insert (squared off on one end, rounded on the other) and can easily be removed using a bit of heat and a utility knife. The rest of the top is held on by 2 screws that you'll find once you remove the insert.

When replacing the top, I used a tiny dab of E6000 - holds well, and is removable if you ever have to go back in.

Rear is not glued at all, held by tabs. If you broke a bunch off (?) I suppose you could use the above as well...
