- The carriers are working on it for years. there are proof of concept deployments in process by certain carriers in various locations, but they are not even close to being ready for true availability.
Standards are still being worked on. We'll see more traction with the standards by end of year and true production deployments year.
Long story short, key2 won't have it and unlikely any BlackBerry issued within the next 12 mos will have it.05-20-18 11:36 PMLike 0 - Very interesting. I had not put together the possibility of that confusion until now.
5G WiFi refers to GHz - gigahertz, the frequency band. The attempt to get off 2.4 GHz was intended to declutter spectrum interference while providing higher speeds over a smaller area as WiFi becomes ubiquitous. Think of a multifamily home, with multiple internet accounts and routers in a small area.
5G in the cellular context refers to the 5th Generation of mobile data standards. It's purely a naming label that has nothing to do with the transport frequency of the spectrum.
5G cellular and 5GHz WiFi are not related.05-20-18 11:43 PMLike 4 - Very interesting. I had not put together the possibility of that confusion until now.

There are rumblings about there being some implementation sometime in 2019, and 2020. The carriers and companies that manufacture cell phones that don't keep up with the trend will be left in the dust when it does arrive.
Here is an interesting article. I wonder how accurate this article's take is on Apple. At any rate, TCL is mentioned. It is a long article and I didn't read all of it.

PS As mentioned above, the current phones don't have the compatibility, and the ones coming out within the next months to at least a year or so probably won't be compatible either. But it will be interesting to see what unfolds.FF22 and anon(2695703) like this.05-21-18 12:08 AMLike 2 - In the US they are working on the 5G (as in the next generation after 4G). IPhone has never been one to be at the cutting edge of technology. They are known, however, for making new technology ubiquitous.
Lest we forget that BlackBerry Bold 9000 supported 3G in May 2008, before the iPhone 3G came out!
It will be like previous shifts. Gradual transition from the previous generation to the next, much like 3G to 4G LTE. LTE to LTE-A. LTE/-A to 5G/5G-EVO.05-21-18 12:48 AMLike 0 - But like with 4G, many are just now rolling out their "5G Evolution", which is really just faster 4G and not really 5G. Sadly the SD625 nor the SD660 are 5G Evolution capable... as their modems are too slow.
But I think you have 5G showing up pretty strong next year... and Apple isn't out of the running in providing "a" 5G capable iPhone this year.
I know Verizon is looking at 5G, not just for phones either.... they have plans to go head to head with cable braodband in the home. You can bet that once AT&T get it rolled out, they will be packaging it with DirecTV hard and heavy. And phone manufactures are looking for 5G to move users to update... something they seem to do a lot less of these days.05-21-18 11:10 AMLike 0 - if TCL/BBMo is not in the 5G consortium, it will not have the advantage of early deployment (like the NY downtown testing). check COSMOS... https://techcrunch.com/2018/04/26/5g-wireless/
Nokia and Ericsson are in the lead. EU ACTC put lot of effort and money way before 5G on the radar (really with mm wave for that). US/China got a lot of catch up to do. TMO/Sprant is way behind (budget and deployment). pink shirt is sweating right now.05-21-18 11:56 AMLike 0 - European Commission - PRESS RELEASES - Press release - Daily News 02 / 03 / 2018
it should start to see test unit in 2020 (just when BB10 out of commission)... apps possibly will start to fade except few eccential type (dictionary, imaging processor, etc.). can't wait (hope to lay a hand on one by that time, hopefully, not use for hand warmer---new yorker can be the early test rich rats... ).05-21-18 12:10 PMLike 0 - I was just reading about this topic yesterday (5G mobile not 5G Wi-Fi).
The first Qualcomm SoC with 5G mobile will be the Snapdragon 855 which will also have the Qualcomm SDX50 5G Modem with it. XDA had a good article about this which you can find here -> https://www.xda-developers.com/qualc...dx50-5g-modem/
As a comparison the Snapdragon 845 was announced on December 7, 2017. The first smartphone available with the Snapdragon 845 was the Samsung Galaxy S9/S9+ which was widely available on March 16, 2018 (March 11, 2018 UAE only). The Pixel 2 has the Snapdragon 835 and was available starting on October 19, 2017 (Pixel 1 was October 4, 2016).
So the earliest you would be able to get a smartphone with 5G mobile is most likely March 2019 with the Samsung Galaxy S10/S10+. For those such as myself that are not fans of Samsung, it is going to be a bit of a long wait. For me personally the issue with Samsung is not that I dislike them, but it is more of a BMW versus Mercedes-Benz thing, where some people love one brand and would not consider the other.
For a BlackBerry with 5G mobile... Whenever they make a 600 series Snapdragon SoC that is compatible with a 5G modem that is when it is going to come out. Others with more knowledge and experience than me have commented about that above, so I have nothing of value to add on that subject.
For me personally the larger issue is that I have a BlackBerry DTEK60 which come out in October 2016 and 2 years of security updates would put it EOL in October 2018. I doubt BBMo is going to do 3 years of security updates for the BlackBerry DTEK60, so that is why I was reading up on the latest SoC from Qualcomm yesterday.
Another issue for me personally is that I live in Canada (Toronto) and I am with Rogers Wireless. Most of the stuff I have found about Rogers 5G has been about setting up 5G (5 Ghz Wi-Fi) on their Wi-Fi AP for home Internet. I read one article with a comment by Anthony Lacavera (Wind Mobile founder), that due to some regulatory issues and delays in Canada we are going to be 2 years behind the rest of the world for 5G mobile deployments. For those in the USA I read that Verizon is starting 5G mobile deployments (LA if I recall correctly) later this year so 5G mobile is coming.brian4591 likes this.05-21-18 12:30 PMLike 1 - But like with 4G, many are just now rolling out their "5G Evolution", which is really just faster 4G and not really 5G. I can understand the interest in 5G compatibility, but BBMo is focused on price, battery and communication. If they discover enough market need for professionals to move large amounts of data over cellular, or the chance of it become standard on the horizon, then they'll probably make a move. They've challenged themselves to make PKB and security a profitable venture. How much envelope pushing can they take on this year and next?jdelvalle56 likes this.05-21-18 11:21 PMLike 1 -

But for sure June of 2018 isn't the time to add the expense of 5G to one of their phones.... Maybe June 2019, we'll just have to see how fast it gets deployed and when standard Chipsets offer it.anon(2695703) likes this.05-29-18 12:09 PMLike 1
