    OK, saw this earlier but my wife just started complaining of a VPN notification that appears when she "wakes up" her phone. Is there a solution to this?

    Never seen it before. Got a screencap? I know on some other devices (Pixel 2) the VPN icon will show, not because you're using a self installed VPN, but because its using the WiFi Assistant services.

    If you're referring to the persistent VPN notification, it's been there for me since day one.

    BTW, I use TorGuard ,but use the openvpn app from f-Droid to connect to it.
