I have a black edition unlocked K1 and am still on ABD796, which comes up as the July 1, 2018 security patch. Is my device just behind or are most people still on this version? I'm unlocked on Telus in Canada.

You ought to be able to get some indication of the update status for the various models here: https://tclota.birth-online.de/

That is the latest for the BBB100-1. It is the Oreo release which was delayed to August release. And it appears the next update has been now delayed until hell freezes over. I think it’s only EMEA and Korean versions that have received further updates.

Oh okay, so it's not just me device then. Thought maybe something was wrong with my K1.

It seems like BlackBerry Mobile has burned themselves with so many variants. Updates have been pathetic this year. I was on the May patch until getting the July patch (Oreo) in August. Have not received an update since, despite the fact that this build has many bugs (apn settings on boot, missing WiFi calling, etc).

At this rate, I will be lucky to get the October update in November, which would further reinforce the current trend of getting the previous month's patch once ever 3 months.

Mine remains super smooth on that build.

I've been curious about another update, but performance wise I like where I am at. Some apps need work, but this core OS seems pretty soild.

Sure but one of the driving reasons for selecting a BB device vs some other device is monthly updates. The Pixel and Essential both receive a steady stream of updates and those are even current OS updates (PH-1 has the latest monthly Pie update). The best that BlackBerry Mobile has ever been able to do is release monthly updates for a two year-old OS (Nougat) and then offer Oreo over a year after it was released...with no further updates for most of us. This isn't a particularly strong track record.
