So finally received a response from the BlackBerry support team who advised:

I apologise for the late reply.

I suggest you try to update the phone to the latest firmware version and check if the problem persists.*If you are not sure which is the latest update, I recommend you to force the update by accessing the Dialer app, typing *#*#2432546#*#* - a notification saying “checkin succeeded” should appear in the Notification Area – please access the Updates app and tap on Check for updates.

Thank you for your time and patience.

We remain at your disposal for any further questions.

I told them that this didn't work and their response is:

Thank you for letting us know.

Your problem is unique to your device. It seems that this has little if anything to do with the updates themselves, but you might have a software incoherence. The easiest way to solve this will be through a factory reset.

You can perform a factory reset by accessing Settings > Backup & reset > Factory data reset and confirming your choice. Before resetting, I suggest performing a backup either on a cloud storage (Drive, Dropbox, etc) or on your PC via a third party app like Xender (available for free on the Play Store).

Please let us know if the problem persists.

We remain at your disposal for any further questions.

    Any one tried this?

Yeah thanks! So did I and I emailed back saying that and that if they log on to the forums here, they'd realise that this is not a unique problem to me!

what makes you say that? if anything, the crackberry users are the ones that understand the software. its bbmobile that needs a better understanding. If they say, try a wipe, well they will believe a wipe is the fix until someone does it and it doesnt work.
