If you used the Mobile Upgrade Tool and it still won't boot, it would seem to have a hardware failure.

I just updated mine and it restarted but then just hung show all the various shapes after entering in my password. Now it won't respond to either a 3, 12, or 32-second power-button hold.

    And now it's blinking a repeating sequence: 1011011 where 1=blink, and 0=pause.

    Ugh!

    :-( neil

Why does this happen sometimes ? ( meaning reboot failure after an update )

Hard to say. Perhaps the update exposed a problem that was already there, or the machinations of installing the update itself led to the failure.

I had similar problem. I started installation of update and after a couple of seconds phone has rebooted with frozen initial screen. I waited for ten minutes and then turned down the phone. After I pushed power button again the phone turned up and completed the update without problem.
