So, I have a KeyOne Limited Edition Black running on AT&T, and I figured I'd give a rundown of my experiences once I upgraded to Oreo and my preferred smart watch, the Gear S3 Frontier.
First, before I upgraded to Oreo - one of the security updates enabled the WiFi hotspot feature, so I didn't have to trick the phone to use it. That luckily continued with Oreo.
Everything works as before (4GLTE, WiFi Hotspot, no VOLTE/WiFi Calling) with the upgrade, but the most noticeable differences are this:
- Battery Life - Used to have to plug in at some point during the day, now - no need. Go to bed with 40-ish percent.
- Memory Usage - any lag is almost completely gone, and I have never really messed with the workings of the OS like I did in the past
- Cache - what's that? Used to weekly clear it, now - is there a cache?
- Stability - I've rebooted my phone once. And it was accidental.
- 5 Ghz WiFi - Rock solid, as opposed to pre-Oreo
- Bluetooth - seems the BT stack has been upgraded/improved. I used to have to manually connect to my car once I setup my Gear S3, now it will auto connect. I also had to try and connect multiple times - now, if it's not connected, I tap connect once and it's connected.
Also, with the upgrade to Oreo - Samsung Pay works on my watch which is awesome. One problem I routinely had before the upgrade, and after the upgrade - was my phone would appear to "forget" my watch. Every week to two weeks, I had to factory reset my watch and go through the setup with my phone as if it was new. After much research, I found some settings on the phone that seems to have fixed that.
Settings -> Battery -> Battery Optimization, turn off for Galaxy Wearable & Gear S Plugin.
Settings -> Apps & Notifications -> All Apps -> Galaxy Wearable/Gear S Plugin -> Scroll to advanced and allow "Modify System Settings".
No, I see absolutely no need to upgrade the KeyOne to another phone anytime in the near future. I runs like butter, has great battery life, stays reliably connected to my watch/car, no lag, reliable WiFi, etc.
