Are you sure it's telling you about unread emails? What about other notifications?

yes. the email account in the hub list says there are 10 emails -- but there aren't any.

Could they be older than your sync timeframe?

Do you have any folders hidden, like a spam folder or something?

I've had the same issue recently. But only on the work side.

I cleared the cache, force stop the inbox app, and then I did a 32 second reboot.

Seems like it's working fine now.
