Does anyone know how to stop the screen from waking up each time you get an email or social media message?

It would be nice if the screen stays off and just the led blinks. More discrete and saves battery life

Settings, notifications, and click on the gear icon in too right. Click on lock screen and change to don't show notifications at all.

There are two option when you click the gear. LED (leave it on) and lock screen. You don't have to change anything else.

Oh I have been drilling down onto each app and manually setting lock screen notification for each app. What’s the purpose of that when I can do it your way which seems to be easier?

Oh and turning this off does not eliminate the visual icons that appear on the top bar of the screen when I unlock the phone right?

No doesn't eliminate anything besides lock screen. And maybe app by app for someone wants them on but maybe not for one app or two.

Easiest way in settings, display, turn off Ambient display, that's all. You don't need to set for each app.
