Go to settings, click on apps. Then click on the "gear" to bring you to the configure apps section. Then click on app permissions. Then choose Phone which will populate with a list of apps and identity which ones you have given permission to access Phone.
In the interim, I ran CCleaner which was not a solution, nor was malwarebytes despite discovering 3 fake apps to delete... also ineffective, until the hammer fell!!!
i wish I knew. due to time constraints, I disallowed phone access to around 20 apps that appeared to not need it. I would better to have disabled one-by-one. simultaneously Malwarebytes discovered 3 fake apps on my storage and deleted same. what cause was proximal ? I am afraid I don't know.

Take note, CCleaner and Malwarebytes and the rest of the lot are not ever needed as long as you are not installing apps from Unknown Sources. But at the same time when you install an app from the Playstore pay attention to the permissions. For example would a calculator app require permission to access Phone? Glad it helped!
keep in mind the phone access permission is needed if any app needs to know to pause/resume during a phone call. your media players would be an example. some games request it for this reason too. Of course this access can be used for nefarious purpose as well.

So true. Generally I do take note. I must'a slipped up. I don't keep CCleaner or Malwarebytes on device, but in this case I used them in an unsuccessful attempt to fix. It was the phone permission hammer that did the trick !!

I followed this and it was fixed... I turned off phone access to everything I didn't see need for it and excepted apps I have on to a long time working fine for years... worked
Yes it does and would of course identify breaches of security by allowing installation of apps from unknown sources, but only if you run the DTEK app of course!
