I use the FM radio on my Sony Z5 Compact all the time.. Love having the option so glad it's going to be on the KEYone as well!
Z30 has it!
Anyone else want AM radio on their phones?
AM radios require a different type of antenna which can't be implemented using something as simple as a short length of wire connected to a headphone plug.
Yeah, they'd have to put in a ferrite bar and shield all the electronics to not cause interference, but it'd be nice. Probably not worth it. Maybe an external dongle? lol
Short being the operative word, AM reception needs much longer antenna. Typically done by wrapping the antenna wire around an RF transparent core, if a small size is called for. Which could be done with a headset cord, but would add substantially to the cost, and there would be a strange, rigid lump at some point along the cable.
It actually has a lot more to do with the normal wavelengths than any difference between AM and FM. AM is commercially broadcast in the Khz range, much longer than Mhz range used by commercial FM. The longer the wavelength, the longer the antenna needs to be.
As apparently the priv has an fm radio but BlackBerry didn't activate it, is there a way to activate it ourselves?
Yeah Im happy about the radio also . Small feature that I really like.
Interesting did not know this. Can you confirm for sure PRIV and DTEK60 have FM radio built in? How can this checked and better yet activated?

Here, for the Privs, it includes links to the FCC filings.
BlackBerryOS.com - BlackBerry Priv Makes FCC Approval List Appearance
Haven't had any coffee yet, so not ready to tackle the DTEK60 yet.
The DTEK50 has FM Radio, but the 60 does not. I think the PRIV didn't have it a first, but may have gotten it with Marshmallow.
Would be great if we could enable on PRIV is FM radio is there.

Do you know how to access it in the priv?
I did some more checking and found that the PRIV does not support FM Radio even with third party apps.
Again,I believe it needs to be activated by your carrier.

TIL my Passport of two years has FM radio.
No I don't think it does
Ok. Then let's see it. My understanding is that carriers need to activate it with software. But they want you to use data and have no reason to do so.

That should only be if your phone is capable of receiving FM radio and you are in the US where some carriers disable the app.
A lot of confusion here - according to the FCC filing the Priv has FM radio. It can't be sold in the US without meeting all the specs that were supplied to, and approved by the FCC. 3 of the 4 models were approved with FM radios, therefor they have the radios. BlackBerry has chosen not to enable them - not the carriers, BlackBerry. A lot of sites that list specs indicate that the Priv does not have FM, thats because BB didn't list it. But it's there.
So far, I haven't been able to find the FCC filing for the DETK60, partly because the FCC uses a long model designation number that has no relation to BlackBerrys model number, partly because I don't really have the time. BlackBerry's specs for the DTEK60 do not indicate an FM radio, that doesn't mean it's not there, it just means BB has decided not to enable it.
And as I said in the earlier post, "I think the 60 has FM". I'm not certain, not even sure where I got the information. But the only way to be certain is to find the FCC filing.
I'm positive the Priv has it, (at least 3 versions, it seems the Asian version wasn't run through the FCC).
Many phones have processor chips that contain an FM radio, but if it is not implemented by the manufacturer, then there is no FM radio capability on that device.
I agree. In the case of FM radio, I have never heard of FM not working on Passport or DTEK50. I.have not heard of FM being operable on any PRIV.
I am US on ATT
Factory unlocked Passport - FM radio works fine
Factory unlocked PRIV - no FM radio capability
Factory unlocked DTEK50 - FM radio works fine
(Not to confuse the FM radio discussion, ATT does limit other features such as WiFi calling and VoIP, etc. If you purchase a device in an orange & white AT&T box, no problem. But it is a fact that carriers-specifically AT&T, have no problem limiting the capabilities of unbranded devices.)
The FM on the Q10 is a great feature for me at the ballpark.
FM Radio? Buzzin.
Not had a phone with this on since my Ericsson K800i. Neither the 8900, 9900 nor DTEK60 had it.
It's a must for listening to football commentary in the UK as you can't get football commentary over digital/internet radio due to licensing issues. So chuffed with this!
