Encryption requires the involvement of both parties. Obviously making a call to a normal phone number wouldn't work.

Get an encrypted voice chat app, like Signal or Telegram. Or conduct all your regular voice calls in some sort of code.

Not encrypted by default , they reinvented the wheel by rolling their own crypto that does not make any sense, not fully open source, non encrypted chats are stored in plain text . List goes on and on for telegram.

    Nothing.

Unless you have a BBM Enterprise (Protected) subscription, you have zero end-to-end encryption.

Kontalk Messenger sends encrypted messages for free, but no calls. You can send voice recordings.

    +1 for Threema

Requires no account setup, no phone numbers, no email address or names. One time purchase. No advertising, no analytics.

Signal requires GCM and a phone number, Threema can be run without any dependency on GCM using polling.

Signal also needs access to your contacts and uploads them regularly. Threema has zero need to access contacts.

Signal does not upload contacts that are stored or visible in anyway as far as I know.

It does not need gcm, there is apk for that or the fork called Noise.

Threema is not open sourced either.

Some say its possible to reverse the hash'd numbers if someone got access to the server. But I just found this which is promising:

I'll take a look at Noise. Does it work with standard signal users or only other noise users?

True, Threema isn't open source. They have released 3rd party security audits which claim to verify the implementation of their cryptography.

Others have dug into the APK itself to learn more about what is being sent back to threema. The app only communicates with 3 servers, each with its own purpose. All three are in switzerland - ie they aren't some cloud amazon server etc. They also showed what sort of data is being included in each communication with those servers.

Edit: Skip to Min 32 to get to threema discussion. First 32 mins is a discussion on crypto messaging itself.
