    That is a new "gesture" that works like you found.

    Also, depending on the apps, pressing and hold on it can divide the screen in half with two different apps. I'm not yet proficient so I don't have the "presses/touches" necessary to execute it. And, not all apps can share the screen with another.

    Nice! I didn't know holding the 'recent'/square button would trigger the split screen, automatically placing the current/focused app on the top.

    It's an Android feature and really useful if you accidentally close a window by hitting the center buttonhole tap of the square and your screen will reappear!

    Yep, crazy, I never knew this, but it let's you swap between the two most recent apps.

    Ah ha, you're talking about the square above the keyboard on the bottom right.

    Single tap reduces the app I'm in.

    Double tap switches me to some other app (I guess previous one).

    Yeah, and apparently holding it splits the screen, and places the current app on top.
