Hub offers blocking for detailed view of each call...

Messages also offers blocking and states no calls or messages...

Do they differ? Does the hub block also block sms/mms or not?

Speaking of stock hub and stock messenger (NOT facebook)

The HUB is not an SMS client - it only displays the notifications received by your SMS app.

You meant to say SMS, not e-mail. ;-)

Let me just ask here. How can one block private/unknown numbers?

No not with the native phone app and not with the native SMS app.
If you dare you could use something like Truecaller which has the capacity to block unknowns but when you put something in like this they do sell your phone details to their commercial clients. The new gets banned like hell best to leave them alone any of those caller ID apps seem to behave the same
