The Mercury is supposed to come out in Q1 of 2017 but a quarter is 3 months long; who knows when this phone will come out.

In order to prevent myself from being stranded without WhatsApp, I just purchased an Alcatel Idol 3 for $70 from Amazon Warehouse in Like New condition. This is for the 4.7" version. There's a seller selling the 5.5" for $100.

I figure if they overprice the Mercury I at least have something to use until the price imminently drops.

I saw this deal yesterday but it disappeared. Fortunately it's back up. Might want to jump on it - most you can lose is $70 right?

I think it more likely we will see a licenced pkb device instead of the BlackBerry-designed Mercury.

Well I think they release a car instead of a phone. Ok, next person to post a bit of speculation to try to win the "who has the correct speculation" game.

I believe they have secretly developed a smart watch based on QNX bb11. The watch actually has a fold out keyboard; sure you can only use one hand to type, but productivity and flow is top notch.

As a company, yes. They have lost money on every device they have designed and manufactured since the Bold 9900. Hence the reason they are switching to a license model.

    Fair enough
But I feel 'IF' the device is marketed a little reasonably, it could do well.
It could do away with all the problems that previous BlackBerry phones have faced (some weren't happy with the Passport's 3 row keyboard, some were not happy with the Priv's keyboard itself or the form factor) this device could change that.
Perfect keyboard, all the apps, conventional screen ratio etc.
    Time shall tell
But after the geekbench test leaks, I'd say it's almost certain the device will release

Why on earth would you buy an Idol 3? You know the DTEK50 is based on the Idol 4, right? I suppose, it's cheap enough if you just want something to use.

Probably because he just wanted a cheap android back up phone? And didn't want to spend $199 or $299 on the Idol 4 or the DTEK50?

The only person I know that might consider the Mercury is fine with sticking a little longer with his Passport, although his liferaft off of BB10 is the Pixel if Mercury doesn't materialize.

This is because BlackBerry did this stupid dance into territories unknown. Had they gone from Bold 9900 and straight to Classic, I think they would have done great. I said this in another thread but BlackBerry's problem was they forgot the heart and soul of their company and tried to be something else. While the Mercury might not be the absolute juggernaut it could have been had they released it instead of the PRIV, I still believe they can sell quite a few.

Me personally, I've had an iPhone for over 6 years and I'm still looking forward to this phone. You'd be surprised how many people feel the same in both the Apple & Android camp.

As I stated in another thread, BlackBerry's weak buying power will force them to sell the Mercury at around $549 (Classic was $449, and Passport was $599 at launch).

So, how many of the pent up customers you allude to will pay that kind of money?

BlackBerry has moved to a partner/licence model for good reason.

It isn't just their weak buying power - it's their extremely low volumes that require them to maximize the profit they make off of each device sold. When you don't sell very many of what you sell, you have to make a healthy gross profit margin to cover your costs, much less realize a net profit.

Which is why I am questioning in another thread as to why can't BlackBerry buy the basic chipset framework from TCL. The same framework of the DTEK60

Also true of most manufacturers not named Samsung* or Apple. They're all fighting over the scraps left and lucky to see single-digit percent returns.

*well, prior to Note 7 anyway.

Think BlackBerry would have been happy with single-digit returns.... as it is, they have lost money on every device they have released.

Licesning is the only solution.... BUT, it requires them to have a licensing partner - which they don't currently have for North America.

And that licensing partner... has to figure out what they can do, that BlackBerry hasn't been able to. If the group in Indonesian is able to turn around sales and make a profit... others might see an opportunity. If that venture flops, then don't expect someone else jumping into the BlackBerry licensing pool (if they are already in, they'll probably jump right back out).
