    Depending on country a salesperson may not make any salary at all, and be 100% commission. In Toronto you get paid more for moving an iphone than a mid-range android.

    (a friend of mine is in sales and had this salesman-to-salesman convo with the guy who was pushing the iphone on him; the phone guy admitted commission was product dependent. Pal ended up with a Motorola android slab).

    Hence my comment on what you (the salesperson) want to do that evening.

    So what you're saying is - sales people do not listen to their customers, instead the go by what they have to push at that time. That doesn't make a good customer salesperson relationship.
    If someone asks about the blackberry then they shouldn't try and be sold Iphone.
    It isn't just phone sales but all sales. Why stock something then not sell it to customers

    I dont know how much sales people earn in your end, but here its 7/h at best and barely afford a transit pass. I doubt they will read all manuals and tech journals as per your thinking.

    By the time a typical customer returns to buy another phone, the salesperson is long gone.

    Most retail sales jobs are not careers. Other than a few very high end retailers, these are mostly low wage jobs that require little training and are hopefully just stepping stones to something else. These guys are not selling houses or Porsches, they're just selling phones.

    On average they will sell what they have in stock to get paid and move on to the next customer. That's what their bosses want to see.
    Funny enough, this is a daily model even in my business vertical. Phone sales or even "career" level product/software.

    When i entered there were 15-20 year veterans who knew products and clients isnide out...sometime between 07 ish to 13 there was that new generation shift. Make money, get out and find another job. No loyalty or belief in the company. Vise versa as well too.

    the point is you should receive excellence of service no matter what area you are talking about.

    I don't like to make life hard for minimum wage, but equally they cant just expect to simply show up to work. if they had any sense of personal pride they would make it their business to know their products....all of them.. Sadly the kids today only understand the stick......they expect the carrot.

    The only way to get them to sell blackberry it seems is to come down hard on them

    part of the reason apple open their own store...with TCL repair center infrastructure in place at North America, BBM might consider set up small booth (not store), for both RMA and sell/education to the customer. As for fairness to the sales chaps, even apple store is not everybody can provide right answer to the questions, their got referal to specialist... (being Mac, software - final cut pro, macbook, or pad, pod, iphone...). If CPW sell more other brand, they should have one K1 guy/gal as specialist answer questions... not necessary to be everyone... IMHO.

    That's as maybe but I don't expect to be advised to go on ebay to buy a case. Nor do I expect to be given patently incorrect information about a device as happened when friend enquired about the keyone.

    The bottom line is if a product is sold by their company they should have knowledge of it. They certainly shouldn't be taking a hostile stance to a product. They are overstepping here and BB should be concerned. I accept that Perhaps there are wider issues such as blackberry lack of marketing to consider.

    Overal though it's a problem that sadly infects the whole of the UK. The art of customer service is a dying art with only isolated individuals who are essentially anomalies, keeping it going.

    The post you quoted references an earlier post. Nowhere have I suggested that the store stock a case for a low volume phone. It might help if you got up to speed before entering the discussion.

    Some people have been conditioned into accepting rubbish service. They set the bar low in life in general. The more discerning expect a little extra.

    CPW has hundreds of stores in the UK & Ireland and employs thousands of staff. With any such company, service levels will vary.
    I've actually had quite good experience with CPW's London stores. In one, a few months ago, I was chatting to a salesman about the DTEKs that were on display & he mentioned the rumoured Mercury (as the Keyone was codenamed) & said if I liked the old-style Blackberry, I might want to hold on. In another store in April, they had the Keyone on display & online a couple of days before the official launch at Selfridges on 28 April. The young sales guy there was telling me this was the latest phone he was really interested in.
    And in a third store a couple of weeks ago, I asked the salesman about the Keyone on display, & even though the security dongle had warped the back which was hanging off, he said it was the fault of customers pulling too hard, and that it was a really solid phone, was selling well & he wasn't aware of any returns. He recommended it.
    They normally have maybe 30 to 40 phones on display, so if I've done my in-depth research into one particular phone, I would normally expect to know more about it than the salesman - and this applies to most things, not just phones.

    And I think its great for us in the UK that we can go into lots of CPW stores & have hands-on experience with the Keyone, as I know people in many other countries can't do this.

    So first of all, for most people Android or iPhone is the right choice. Most people aren't phone nerds like we are. They just need a phone that works easily with minimal fuss. Retailers like it also because an easy to use phone is less likely to be returned, especially with Apple and their customer service. So for most people, you would be doing them a service to direct them to the normal phones that will easily work with all the services and accessories they might want next month or next year.

    The other issue is that if a person has the willingness and diligence and ability to learn details about products that hardly anyone buys, then that person must love phones. If he loves the industry that much and is that motivated to know everything about it, why would he work a minimum wage sales job??! He should apply himself to become a designer and engineer and pursue his (or her) passion.

    Where I work we have hundreds of open positions with salaries 10-20x US minimum wage right out of school and we can't find enough qualified people to fill them. For exceptionally smart and motivated candidates, we don't even require a university degree anymore and we provide our own training. So with jobs like that out there, who do you think are taking these low paying jobs now at Best Buy and the like? It's not people who lie awake at night thinking about the improvements in the latest SoC's.

    I thought CPW core ethos and the chief reason why customers would favour them was to provide an impartial service. There should be no incentives for staff to promote certain brands over others- not here.
