Camera seems to have overly bright background. Any settings to compensate?
Also, the camera pic itself is dark when opened?

Seems like it's your exposure. Are you using manual mode? Also try to tap on the focus area and it'll adjust automatically.
That's with HDR mode on
Maybe it's your scene selector. try a different scene. as well, try it with manual settings such as exposure over ride. is this from a K1?
Looks as if the exposure slider has been pushed a bit too high.
I think this is set as the default. if the exposure bar is that scale w numbers along the bottom, then it's in the middle. if ur saying it's a bright background, I should manually slide that bar/numbers to the negative side, then that's a new lesson/strategy.
separately, I can't see the camera screen with sunglasses on. this is new to me. with the PRIV I could see and take pics w sunglasses on. Now, the sunglasses make the screen look black when the camera is on.

Are your sunglasses polarized?

Probably, but I had the same sunglasses using the PRIV, which wasn't a great screen.
For the sunglasses this is the explanation for OLED (PRIV) vs. LCD (KEYᵒⁿᵉ) :

I just bought some sunglasses non-polarized and it's still very hard to see the camera screen w sunglasses...worse than PRIV and disappointing as I wear prescription sunglasses, so sort of need to use them...I can barely make out the image.
