    I've been trying to set up a widget with my hub app but without success. For some reason the default screen when I swipe up on the three periods below the hub icon is Google Hangouts. I can't seem to change it. Is this a defect or am I doing something wrong?

    Try removing the Hub icon from the homescreen and adding it back. Then for the first time it will ask for the widget, select the desired one.
    Hope it works!!
