    Can BBM be used as a default messenger app having nothing at all to do with the BBM communication service at all?

    If so, how would it interact with "normal" sms interloquators? Normally?

    If yes, would the delivery and read receipts be available as an option?

    Would there be any downside?

    Nope. But if Jim Balsillie had his way, BBM would have been called SMS 2.0.
