Nothing wrong with preferring amoled screens in general, but the Priv amoled was horrendous in bright sunlight. I found myself seeking out shadows, and cupping my hands around the display just to try and read it. And I always kept brightness at 100%. It was shocking to see the difference when I held my Priv next to my Passport. The KEYone is a worthy successor to the Passport, the Priv was not. I'm finally happy with a BB again.

I think it's all software optimization, not the screen. The brightness auto adjustment on my PRIV was slow to non-existent. I believe the BlackBerry used stock Android for this feature. On my S7 Edge...it gets nice and bright in full sun, and very quickly. No issues.
Oh trust me, there's a difference, I believe Samsung keeps their top shelf SuperAMOLEDs to themselves, and they supply OEMs like BB, HTC, OnePlus etc... With lesser quality units, those OEMs then do their own software and hardware tweaks e.g. adding oleophobic coating, anti glare, the type of glass e.g. Gorilla Glass etc etc..

AMOLED had came a long way and is technologically much more superior than LCD. Also, they give a lot more flexibility by being thinner, brighter, more battery efficient and can only lit up one pixel... just to name a few advantages.
Indeed, when implemented correctly e.g. by Samsung and LG, AMOLED is leaps ahead of LCD, hence even Apple have conceded and are moving to it.

I belive the PRIV used a cheaper AMOLED panel unfortunately, regardless it still looked damn good.

I would agree in the sense that given Samsung is the supplier, one can expect to see a better value screen dollar for dollar on any Samsung versus any OEM who is purchasing them from Samsung, simply due the economic reality of this arrangement. Therefore, your suggestion Samsung 'saves the best screen for themselves' (if true) is just as likely to be a reflection of their competitive advantage than anything else.

In terms if the brightness issue, and citing the example of the PRIV, it was on par (or close) with the best at the time in terms of brightness, pixel density, etc. and given the degree to which Android is customized on a Samsung, I have to think that software is also a major factor. The PRIV was certainly capable of brightness. The problem was it lagged or failed to adjust to bright environments. That was an issue on other BlackBerry phones that used AMOLED...the Q10 for example, had the exact same problem...

To be fair, until very recently AMOLED manufacturers really could not have supplied Apple in the quantities and quality required. I am sure they were aware of pluses and minuses. That is always the hangup for Apple for bleeding edge, unless they design themselves.

I too would've preferred an AMOLED display, but when I'm using the KEYone every day and NOT comparing it to another device side by side, it's a passable, good display. I never feel like it's a poor display by any means when I use it every day.

    Indeed.

WRT Software, yep, very true, Samsung bake in all kinds of Display adjustments in their SW. Everything from Natural colours to super vivid. They even have a mode simply for VR.

Indeed. This is part of the reason why HTC left AMOLEDs back in 2010, the HTC Desire and Nexus One had AMOLED but supply became thin and they had to split, some Desires had AMOLED some had LCD.

I've had amolded on the majority of my devices. I don't miss it. I don't know why people knock this lcd screen. I find it accurate in saturation and plenty bright in sunlight.

Even my passport is much brighter than the keyone, and they are both LCD. I don't know how they thought this dim display would be a good idea. Sure less battery consumption, but if you can't see anything in bright sun, it's useless. Therefore amoled would be a much better option, brighter and less battery consumption.
'plenty bright in sunlight' you must be kidding lul

Just picked up my K1 to replace my dying Nexus 6p and now dead passport, I sincerely prefer the K1's display I had to Google the 6p to see it was amoled, this K1 looks sharper to me may not be as colourful, but looks crisp especially in the sun noticed that today, this is one seriously good phone

I'm no blackberry fanboy. Actually this is my first blackberry ever. Yes my s7 is brighter in the sun. But this phone is Def bright enough in sunlight, and the adaptive display works much better. On my s7 it's either way too dim or super bright. This screen imo functions much better when it's on adaptive mode. I never ever turn that off. On my Samsung I couldn't use that mode. But it's very subjective I guess.

plasma is bad idea for handset, it is high voltage, high power consumption. As for OP, be careful what you wish for: LCD degradation due to backlight LED (white), the color usually do not shift, but the brightness might be. AMOLED consists of 3 different OLED, they are (1) different sensitivity to sunlight, (2) degraded at different rate - especially, blue color... check apple display, they don't use AMOLED, until recently the blue LED issue resolved. As for sammy, guess why they use pinkish home screen? Yes, OLED default is black (off state), that save some battery, compare to LCD (the back light still on, but LCD is in close state). But sunlight readable is better, color balance is better (you print your photo, most likely you get what it shows on the screen... OLED, you get saturated image - someone like them, but not me, like fresh ink jet print, you want get rid of the 2, or 3 before you start useing the new cartridge), but when you print out your image to paper, you see the difference. In addition, LCD currently resolution is good, some high end put a "black" grid in between to ensure no light cross contamination, or drive to black cycle, the TFT usually is verticle structure, to maximize the display area. OLED usually got larger pizel size and some times, a bit light cross contamination made it less "sharp". based on my limited understanding of both technology... (you can google it in detail). IMHO, be careful what you wish for... I am looking forward to see new iphone AMOLED, but so far, sammy one hasn't impress me (Z30 too).
