How come it works so poorly, rarely adjusts the brightness level comfortably, and doesn't help with battery consumption AFAIK from my experience

I don't use mine. The adjustment is really bad, most of the time instead of helping it makes it even worse.

I use 'adaptive brightness' on my KeyOne, whereas I turned it off on my Priv. Although it sounds counterintuitive, having 'adaptive brightness' on my Priv seemed to drain the battery. I do not perceive the same problem with my KeyOne, but because it lacks the AMOLED screen, it glows in the darkness and the dimmest setting is far too bright for night owl eyes with astigmatism. Happily, a blue light filter fixed this.

other than a fixed & often unsatisfactory algorithm, BlackBerry might consider adding some fine tuning to this potentially useful feature

Yup, mine got worse after the recent update or updates. Can't remember when exactly it went bad but it's terrible, goes completely dim too often.

Works extremely well for the Priv, with all the tweaks and settings available, it should do well on the K1, and other screens.

And remember, to set the baked in adaptive, you first turn it off. Then set the brightness to suit you in whatever is is your most common lighting scenario, then turn adaptive on. - It works, so so, but it does work.
