So, it seems that the norm for bbmobile / BlackBerry is 24 months only, of security updates, and then potentially ad hoc depending on need. The 24 months starts, apparently, when the new device is available for sale in the first country sold. That is, not when the device is sold in your country, but the first country it is sold in.

Which, in the case of the keyone, would have meant that by the time it was sold in some euro and south american countries the 24 months would have been counted down by say 3 to 4 months or more. Yep, only about 20 ish months or less of security updates life span on the new device.

And then there are other software updates to consider, and apparently they're on 24 months as well.

So, unless someone buys the new device very early on, in the first country of release, then they are spending money on a device that has less than 24 months of security and other software updates.

I wouldn't have thought that this 'policy' is particularly attractive, to existing bb customers, or to attracting new BlackBerry customers, imo.

Bbmobile / BlackBerry shot themselves in the foot?

You are extrapolating the Priv experience to predict what TCL will do.

All we know for sure about TCL's plans is that they guarantee a minimum of 24 months. We'll have to see what that means, and how it plays out. I see it as assurance if things go poorly.

Since the KEYᵒⁿᵉ and the Motion are essentially the same device - it is more than reasonable to assume the KEYᵒⁿᵉ will keep receiving patches as long as the Motion does. So, even if they stick to the 24 month minimum, the clock has only started ticking now.

BlackBerry left hardware so they don't care. For growth of business, it's highly unlikely that BBMo cares about existing BlackBerry customers since it's a small crowd. They're more interested with the former BlackBerry fans that left, who cared more about the Android ecosystem and went to other brands OEMs 3-5 years ago. The remaining BlackBerry fans are too fickle and fragmented to please from profit standpoint. They didn't license the brand for the existing customer base...

It seems tcl has been leaking for a while, and not specific to BlackBerry or Bbmobile sales:

    Nostalgia.

    Loyalty.

I have also read around the forums that there are other vendors who are much worse at keeping updates up.

I never keep a phone for 2 years, so any commitment to updates beyond that is irrelevant to me.

Plus, the only Android commitment over 2 years I would believe would be from Google themselves (Pixel).

Sony also guarantees 2 major OS version upgrades for their flagship and some mid range phones. There is a website where you can track per model how many upgrades are left. Those released with 6.0 are already on 8.0 and still get monthly patches.

Thing with support cutoff on Priv is a business decision to give TCL upper hand on their own devices and make people move from Priv to TCL. That's all it is too it. DTEKS were nothing but a market survey for TCL so they do not count. What counts is KeyOne support but unfortunately you will have to wait to see where is the actual support cutoff since TCL doesn't want to comment on it. I don't know how big of a deal is for them to announce support life publicly, that's unless they do business on a fly (which is most likely) so sales dictate the amount of support or their support is shorter than majority of competitors.

And how much big of a deal really is to push monthly updates you get from Google and all you have to do is integrate it into your own build? That's like a 3-5 people job really. But just the notion that your OS has monthly security patches tells you how bad OS is at its foundation and principles.

There is a lot more to it than that.

The OEM has to integrate said changes to their own implementation, and obtain&add all of the patches for each of the hardware components used on the device. Then they have to test the builds to make sure nothing has been broken.

Stopping the Priv updates after 24 months is a function of several things. As BlackBerry's last supported device, they want to get it off their books. Their component suppliers probably only committed to 2 years themselves, so pushing them further would have cost a great deal of money.

As far as Sony promises are concerned, I still wouldn't depend on anything after 2 years. Sony could easily decide to exit hardware themselves at any time.

Not sure what your comments have to do with the duration of bbmobile / BlackBerry security updates, and general software updates, which is the topic of this thread ....

I suspect you're on thin ice in this thread 😉

The physical keyboard is the only differentiator, because one can use the BlackBerry hub suite on android devices other than bbmobile devices, and the bb vkb as well. (So loyalty and nostalgia are covered, as well as continuing financial support of bb if one pays the subscription model)

As to other vendors not going past two years of security updates, samsung and sony and possibly others do.

Samsung updates some of their models past the two year point, that is security and software. And Sony it seems.

As to 'commitment', i can't state knowledge, just observed practice.

I might be inclined to bring Samsung into the Google fold, but still wouldn't hold my breath over any other commitment that extends beyond 2 years. Too much can change in that time frame.

Try the most recent autoloader. 10.3.3.3057.

Do not use Link. Use Ultimate Backup instead if you wish.

If you have any questions, it would be best to continue in the relevant thread.

Your phone won't stop working out of nowhere when monthly security updates stop showing up. Most vulnerabilities seem to me to be exploited through installing from untrusted sources and/or improper use of the phone. As security savvy BlackBerry users with unrootable hardened Android phones I would think most are leagues above the security level of a typical Android user, even with an out of date security update. I can certainly understand being disappointed but I can't see this as being such an end of the world thing as to warrant all the negativity and doom and gloom, but whatever. *shrug*

BlackBerry Integrity Detection engine will still receive silent updates to its detection algorithm.

Google Play Protect also actively detects app vulnerabilities.

Just love that 'sod you all, I'm OK Jack so stuff you' attitude here. Maybe some of us just can't afford to just keep on 'throwing' large wads of cash away every couple of years, but hey, so longs you are alright, that's no problem is it??

Umm, I said it was irrelevant "to me".

Then I went on with my main point that I would be dubious of any commitment that was further than two years.
