This morning it appears on off switch has stopped working.

Can’t wake the phone up (plugging the power cable helped out, activated double tap screen meanwhile)

Can’t switch off the phone.

Any clues what happened and how to solve.

Phone was in protective cover, including full side button coverage.

Not much you can do apart from swinging by a repair shop.

You could always enable USB debugging and reboot the phone with the "adb reboot" command just to try a power cycle.
