After reading today that Sound Recorder on our Key devices is listed as a top Malware app from a company owned by TCL, I had a look at permissions. Why would a simple Sound Recorder need so many sensitive permissions? This just gets better by the day! I confirm that what you have shown is correct, but what do they mean by "capabilities"? Do these capabilities supersede permission?

Never mentioned capabilities. But that would also be worrisome!

If you're worried, use NetGuard to prevent connections.

Well just take a look at the Crackberry Forums app.... I think the word capabilities is the key here... stop worrying. Sounder Recorder (System App)-notable-00050.jpeg

    I don't think it is.

The TCL BlackBerry version may very well be based on the Alcatel spyware version, hence all of the permissions. But the BlackBerry version does not have any built in trackers and it never connects to the internet as far as I have seen.

The name of the application (com.tct.voicerecorder.bb) is different from the alcatel version and has a different signing signature.

If you really want to disable it, you should be able to via ADB.

Yep, they have different versions the BB version like mention has BB added to it. Whether or not is just a complete repackage from TCL/BB for the BBM devices I cant say for sure but they are different versions for sure

Hopefully that's the case, however, no-one has yet confirmed 100%.

Makes me wonder what's baked into the cheap TCL TV's? This is a shady relationship at best (TCL owning a Malware company) and perhaps a direct threat now that the Partnership is over. We shall see! Confidence in anything TCL might very well be misplaced! Caveat Emptor!

I don't think we need to be worried about this app. I've monitored it closely for over a year. It has never done anything that would lead me to want it disabled - which is possible via ADB.

That's good to hear. I won't b taken the chance because I don't want any of my info on Chinese servers, for privacy reasons.

For me, it's not a question of whether an app has misbehaved. I only want apps from highly trusted developers. No mainland Chinese company can avoid the Chinese government's data retention policies.

The app and TCL may be completely innocent, but in terms of minimizing my attack surface, their apps still have to go.

Cannot be removed or disabled as I mentioned. That is what is so troubling!

Weird. I had no problem removing it on my AT&T KEYone. I simply dragged it to uninstall and it uninstalled.

Perhaps it's not a system app in the AT&T build?

It is definitely not possible to disable or uninstall as the the screen shots I provided clearly show. We have still had no reassurance that this app is completely safe! Can Malware work in the background without showing any signs of Internet connection? Can it mask such connection?

It can be removed from the user-space via adb as stated above. I still see no evidence it's a problem at all though.

No. I said TCL was in their rights to install bloatware if they wished, although I thought it was poor form given the BlackBerry clientele. But, as we found out, it was an accident and was rectified.
