From what I've seen, "monthly" updates come every 3 months or so, usually about a month late. When I had a Verizon-branded PRIV, the updates were 6 months behind at one point. Now that I have a generic Key2, I thought it would be much, much better (like actually every month, on time, as BlackBerry still advertises to this day), but it's only just a little bit better. I have faith that BlackBerry will release patches for any critical security flaws promptly, but it is a bit off-putting to know that there are non-critical patches out there that I'm not getting in a timely manner, like for the camera.

Monthly updates is most definitely a misnomer...

That's because BlackBerry incorporates other fixes, like camera fixes for example, and sometimes new features in the monthly updates. So that means they're always a little later.

I was wondering (haven't searched for an answer here in the forums yet...):
BlackBerry apps are being updated with bugfixes every month or so... And I get the feeling that it is the first sign of the security updates getting pushed in a short time after the app updates. Or am I wrong?

My BlackBerry Beta Apps all updated in December but I have yet to receive the December security patch update... so in my case there is no correlation.

EDIT: I just received 6 BlackBerry Beta App updates. Now I will patiently wait and see if the January security patch shows up... 🙉🙈🙊

Impossible to say for sure but I wouldn't be surprised if it's out around Friday.
It's Friday and no surprise today... I'm really not surprised an update didn't get pushed... hahaha

The day is young? Just kidding not super surprised either. Sprint KeyOne was first out of the gate for the KeyOne in a shocking event.

Yeah, I remember in the past, people kept saying "no, Motorola won't push updates, it's Christmas so no one's working on it" but they ended up pushing updates on Christmas day two times. So maybe BlackBerry will surprise us today.
