You sound like a lucky sunuva.
I don't think luck is an issue. But I do the following:

    1) Keep a list of every app I want installed on my phone. (Apps I only use occasionally are installed when needed then removed immediately.). As a result, I keep <50 apps on my phone)

    2) Organize my apps thematically by screen and folder so that re-organizing them is very straightforward.

    3) Store no information locally on my phone that isn't backed up daily to another location.

    4) Document and Practice my recovery procedure so that I don't have to memorize it.

Nice. You're in a tech job aren't you?
My issue is the themed folders - during a device upgrade, you have to redo it all.

My issue is the themed folders - during a device upgrade, you have to redo it all.
My folder set up is simple: seven folders on the home screen and one on the second screen:

    HOME SCREEN
-Business A apps, shortcuts and files
-Business B apps shortcuts and files
    - Personal Productivity apps and shortcuts
    - Personal Communications apps and shortcuts
    - Personal Media apps and shortcuts
    - Personal Security apps and shortcuts
    - Personal Reference apps and shortcuts

    SECOND SCREEN
    Personal Commerce Apps

The only apps not in a folder are Firefox Focus Browser and the Hub apps.

I just use Google Backup to Backup on the old device (which you should have working automatically anyway) - and then I restore on the new device. Curiously the first time I did this, my 2nd KEY2 was identical to the first - with home screen and ICON positioning all the same.

The only pain point for me was setting up the accounts in Hub again - and all those settings and signature options etc.

I can't remember if I used the content transfer wizard for the txt messages or not - but I think I didnt need to use it at all.

I don't think the transfer wizard worked for the Hub account details, and nor did Google backup - which is why I had to do that manually.
    Google backup?

Not an option if you want to keep your data private.
