    Nobody responded to my earlier question, but I found the solution to missing contact photos or avatars from the text messages screen....

    My solution was, just delete the phone contact, then re-add the contact. I also resized my contact image around 200x200, but I don't know if that made a difference. The act of deleting the contact and re-adding the phone contact seems to work.
