Unfortunately not. It would require a dual-camera system. Google successfully added Portrait Mode with one camera only but with massive R&D ressources :

Blackberry is software company now so I am sure they can do it.

other phones do it with similar camera specs using software. I'm hoping an update will help the rear cameras to be a bit more up to date with some of the flagships.

A security software company. Not entertaining softwares like that kind of stuff.
And even if so, TCL is responsible for the camera software, not BB.

Even Nokia seems to be able to do it ("Blurred background selfies") and this is nearly the only app that is company-own build on this Android-One Nokia 7 Plus: https://m.gsmarena.com/nokia_7_plus-review-1752p5.php

But guizmox is right, sadly camera app dev is not BlackBerry anymore.

Call me a cynic, but I find it hard to believe Google managed to equal or surpass all other Android OEM's in the span of a few short years with its own devices based on it's "R&D investment" alone.

Not that I doubt they have significant resources...but they also own and control the OS, and have full access to the technology every Android oem has developed for the platform. If that doesn't give them an unfair advantage with the camera, or any other app or improvement for that matter, I don't know what will.

I doubt it will happen but I think it'd very possible with software. the pixel 2 can accomplish it with a regular front facing camera.

Security software yes but it's not the main focus of this phone. Take away the keyboard and what it can do and it's an android phone. They can cover all bases easily enough
