Is there a way I can get either Hub or an alternative BlackBerry native app as SMS app? I'm not sure when it happened, but Google snuck in their spy/adware app as default.

Yes you can. Search the threads, plenty of Text message alternatives.

You're using Android, so avoiding Google is inevitable. Your best bet is to get Chinese variant and you'll be free from Google Services.

Hardly, it's perfectly avoidable (at least in EU) because Google's practices have been deemed illegal.

But that aside, I can recall Hub+ being the default app. Why has this changed?

Hub on Android was never an SMS client.
