One of them but seems like more got it. Basically guy was writing an app that consumes WhatsApp notifications via Google's API, which by the sound of things is similar to what Hub does for its integration...

Wonder if BlackBerry got the said C&D too, lol.
Everyone is concerned about privacy these days (especially Facebook as they got caught with their pants down)... allowing 3rd party apps to collect and reply to messages adds to those privacy concerns.
I don't know how WhatsApp and Hub interact with one another.... can you read older messages inside of HUB, can you reply to messages directly from HUB.... or is HUB just a notification center?
BlackBerry is probable in a better position to get permission than a single app developer...
The contention point is that the said developers aren't even using an API provided by WhatsApp.
since BB is suing FB/Insta/WA over messaging patents it wouldn't surprise me if they don't want to play ball with BB anymore.
Here are some more details; if I am understanding this correctly this is what Hub is doing. We can only hope that BlackBerry has WhatsApp confirmation and if not, perhaps the whole matter has no legal legs!

The BlackBerry Hub doesn't have any options other than showing you there's a message, it just launches the app if you tap said message.
True and it's accessing some part of the OS in order to do that.
Like the article reads, the C&D may not even have a legal leg but still, the developers which WhatsApp is after are allegedly doing the same thing Hub does.
It's all a little weird, seems too light of an excuse.
It's more so about WhatsApp/Facebook going all lawyer up with a Google-sanctioned API (filtering for notifications). The developers didn't do anything listed in the C&D but could be intimidated into complying.
AFAIK Hub+ Services uses the same mechanism to collect notifications for displaying in the, er, Hub.
Even if BlackBerry got a C&D, they wouldn't be under the same pressure as a small developer. Shame FB/WhatsApp have to be so slimey though. They're just poking at the little guy because they know they can't really fight back, even if the whole thing is bunk.
Too be honest... does sound like a privacy issue. Apps just tapping into the Android OS's notification system to "read" and even "write" messages could be used for purposes that were not intended.

It's always possible functionality like this could be restricted or blocked if Google thinks it's being misused, that happened recently with accessibility services.
