The BlackBerry brand is 100% managed by Optiemus in India.

TCL manages it everywhere else, and have so far delivered on devices, patches, and updates.

Still doesn't change that he bought a BlackBerry, because it's a BlackBerry.... If customers have to start looking at where a device is manufactured or by who, the "brand" has a problem.

BlackBerry should have required some minimum standards by the three licensees.. As well as BBMo should have done the same with the devices they sublicensed to Optiemus (doesn't include the Evolve).

You speak as if BlackBerry had a choice, or had any bargaining power whatsoever.

Those were the conditions presented TO BlackBerry to enter those markets. The alternative was nothing at all (which is not far off from how it ended up anyway).

Agreed. Optiemus has not handled the brand well in India. The alternative was NO brand in India.

In any event, we're here to share knowledge. The OP now knows the truth, and now knows who to blame.

They had a choice, accept the current terms and the money that comes with it or protect the brand and reputation. They made their choice and customers will react accordingly.

And realistically, we don't know what the terms are or why some licensees are updating devices the way they are.

Protect what? What is the brand worth in India if there is NO brand in India?

The brand has long had a problem going back to around 2012-2013 with the BB10 delay and fail. Of course, that was only with the people that hadn’t already moved on to Android/iOS by then. Unfortunately, BlackBerry is becoming the Edsel or Studebaker of 21st century.

BlackBerry is more than a phone brand, if licensees screw up badly it's easy to see that having a ripple effect in other businesses. The opposite is also true if a licensee does great.

Seriously, most consumers think BlackBerry went under long ago with the perception of shock that BBMo actually produces BB licensed phones. Nobody outside BB Enterprise markets QNX, EMM, MDM and Cylance even knows the other businesses that BB still operates in or participates in through acquisitions..

I'd like to see the Venn diagram of the several thousand device customers and the autonomous auto / radar / corporate UEM customers - particularly in India. Sounds like two circles out of site of each other to me.

Enterprise isn't a bubble, consumer tastes overlap which is something BlackBerry Ltd was slow to recognize when they made phones. Why do many CEO's no longer carry BlackBerrys? Why did IT staff stop deploying BlackBerry devices infavor of iOS and Samsung ones? Why are Slack and WhatsApp now the goto messaging app for many businesses and work groups? etc.

If you're buying a device like the Evolve odds are you care about security and might even have a business use for it. If you purchase the Evolve and feel burnt by it, would you recommend any BlackBerry product moving forward (smartphone or otherwise)?

So hypothetically if a licensee dropped the ball with regards to security, do you believe the public would differentiate between BlackBerry and the licensee and no form of damage control would be needed?

We can use BBM as another example, BlackBerry putting out a separate press release touting BBMe shows that they're aware of the impact that "negative" news could have on the brand and other businesses IMO.

We're fans and enthusiasts so we understand how things work with the different licensees, I don't think the general public (enterprise or otherwise) would necessarily have the same understanding.

I think it's irrelevant what average Joe Public thinks. He doesn't buy Autonomous Auto / embedded vehicle, BlackBerry Dynamics, BlackBerry Workspaces, BlackBerry AtHoc, BlackBerry Radar, BlackBerry Spark, SecuSuite, BlackBerry UEM, or BlackBerry Cylance.

You're missing the point. The overwhelming complete majority 99.9% of the population isn't even aware of BlackBerry from a product standpoint, let alone it's shortcomings. Of those who do care, most are the aficionados that are very aware of the peculiar licensing arrangements. The remaining uninformed or informed that purchase BlackBerry Enterprise isn't enough to worry about versus the money that Optiemus could waste or TCL could waste on behalf of the other licensees.

You're protecting a legendary reputation that exists only in past memories that are irrelevant or largely forgotten.

The selling point for a lot of those items is security and the BlackBerry brands reputation for security helps with that. If security on a "BlackBerry" was ever called into question it would naturally impact the brand. We're seeing that now with Huawei, the issue was with their networks but their phones are suffering for it.

You can't begin to compare one company that has the global scale and scope that's 100x the size of the other. The larger spends as much in toiletries and bathroom supplies for it's employees in one year as the other has in total sales. Then factor that smaller company spends as much for those same employee supplies for it's employees as the profit generated from it's brand licensing of a shuttered division.

We're discussing (at most) a few thousand disappointed people in India due to lack of updates.

Otherwise, TCL has done a good job in the rest of the world in that regard.

Regardless of success, prosumer and enterprise is basically their only market. If around 800,000 BlackBerry branded devices were sold in 2017 I doubt many of those people are aware of licensing specifics. And realistically, that's the point of licensing a brand in the first place. You don't license a brand to then distance yourself from it.

It's not comparing companies, it's comparing situations. No credible accusations have really been made against Huawei devices but even before the US sanctions, there was still a stigma around them because of the network accusations.

    Brands mean something.

Otherwise, TCL has done a good job in the rest of the world in that regard.
For monthly updates and compared to other licensees and even BlackBerry Ltd themselves? Absolutely. Unfortunately, there are many other competitors in the race.
