When you plug it in, is there a notification on your phone that says "Connected in charging mode" or something like that?

Looks like your 2014 120d has iDrive 4.2, just like my 2014 535i Gran Turismo. I never plugged any of my phones into the car. I have mine connected via bluetooth. Plus consider that the USB port will only provide 0.5A @ 5V, which means your phone will *discharge* while plugged in if you actually use it (playing music, navigation, etc.)

I will test mine and let you know what happens.

Don't forget that you can update your iDrive software by going here:

    https://www.bmw.com/en/footer/software-updates.html

You will need an empty USB drive that is formatted with FAT32. If you just have a 2 or 4GB stick floating around, just delete the contents and place the file on it. Plug the drive into one of the 2 USB ports, probably the one in the glove compartment, but it may differ on your model. You will get prompted on the iDrive display to continue with the update. Then it will reboot.

My Audi can't read it either. I asked my friend who is the foreman and he said the disk mode on the Android devices isn't like it used to be in previous versions so the car won't read it, regardless of setting to MTP, PTP, etc... That being said, the new models have Android Auto so it does work now.
