Ok, here is a simple question no doubt for many of you - how do you update apps?

I had one of those drop down alerts stating that an update is available for BBM. I cleared those drop down notifications without updating but I can't find anywhere where you can click and confirm if any apps require updating?

Just tap on the Google Play Store and then open the left-side menu. Tap on "my apps and games", there you go

Open the Google Play Store. Swipe to open the menu and go to My Apps and Games. Tap on Installed. It will show any updates you have.
