BlackBerry doesn't say it exists yet, so...
Where would they advertise?
I still don't understand who the DTEK60 is aimed at. It can't be consumers, BB have been "Enterprise-focused" for months. Maybe there are full-page DTEK60 Ads in "Fleet Fone Monthly", I don't know.
What I am sure of though is that without any clear (and sizable) target demographic, the DTEK60 is dead before it arrives.
And even if they *did* advertise, at least for the U.S., without carriers, people won't have a way to do the "little money to none" down for a new phone at carriers. The flagships are expensive, but not with the way they're advertised. People are going to scoff at the full price of the DTEK60, when compared to the $0 or $99 of the iPhone 7, for example. Again, without carriers, there won't be displays either, for people to try out. Advertising and distribution go hand-in-hand. Advertising only solves a part of the problem.
The Pixel shot itself in the foot by sticking to Verizon, but that's still one more carrier than what BlackBerry can do with the DTEK60.
Maybe it was part of the deal with TCL way back when the deal was made? Chen would have had to commit before knowing DTEK50 sales.... Ostensibly it's enterprise focused, who knows for sure though.
I just want them to release the Mercury - which probably also won't sell in any volume - but you bet your sweet patootie I'll be grabbing one, lol.
Market opportunity? Marketing? What the hell is that, with some luck kim Kardashian could be spotted with one and flashed on the tabloids front page.
All sarcasm aside that seems to be the trend they had before, which was more of a hope that someone famous would be seen and talked about there phone.
It's not that they need to go bash samsung over there fire stick but getting anything out and making it an option and a KNOWEN option that is priced low enough to make it a great hold over.
Done on BlackBerry Classic, Rip Z10
It's not like besides the Note 7, the only other Android phone is the Dtek60.... there nothing to take advantage from Samsung's fireworks....
The only problem I see is that that advertisement is also valid for any other Android product other than the Note7.
It's funny my priv gets pretty insanely hot but never exploded, which hope the dtek60 won't do the same

Interesting idea but nope, I think that is totally out of the question.
I've read some response from owners of the faulty phones in the communities I frequent. From what I have seen, the unanimous response has been to get a refund and buy a popular alternative (I've seen HTC, Pixel, and iPhone mentioned a lot). They want a quick and safe option after all the trouble Samsung has given them, I doubt they would consider Blackberry phones either of those things right now.
Yes, I'm coming to suspect that the DTEK's were an uncancellable two-fer deal with TCL. I see some purpose in the D50 as a fleet phone for a niche market segment... I see no purpose whatsoever in the D60... and if I were Chen I wouldn't have released it if I'd had any choice.
BB's target market for D60 *must* (surely?) be enterprise coz otherwise, without carrier support, it really is DBA in the consumer space.
As you know, I doubt Chen will produce the Mercury. Being an old cynic, I believe Chen's very public ponderings on whether to release the Mercury are his way of softening-up and preparing the fans for bad news. ;)
Yer bumming me out, lol. I dunno, I'm going to remain cautiously optimistic that he's gonna end the hardware run with a PKB, even if it's just to keep revenue numbers higher. I think it would do decent sales if everyone is aware it might be the last PKB. For the slabs, it doesn't matter as much as there's a wealth of choice in the market.
I just think it is a missed opportunity to capitalize on the 'chink' in the Samsung armor. Not that BlackBerry has a compatible phone to the Note 7, but that BlackBerry is still in the handset business and has phones. Most people I talk to are pleasantly surprised to know that BlackBerry still makes phones and they reminisce about the BlackBerry phones they had and loved. A problem for a phone brand is an opportunity for their customers to be made aware of and consider a different brand . . . namely BlackBerry. It at least would put BlackBerry in the phone conversation and spark curiosity.
Carriers do not stock BlackBerry phones because their customers do not know they exist . . . there is no demand. Advertising might create some type of buzz and/or interest in the product. Ijs. I am not a marketing person but I know from experience that if I am using a product that has major issues I conduct research an due diligence on viable options. This is the process I am doing now since BlackBerry (or John Chen) has basically decided to remove themselves from the handset business and devote their energy to software. A TCL phone with an Android OS and a BlackBerry stamp is not a BlackBerry phone . . . it is a BlackBerry enhanced phone. SMH. It saddens me. But, I think that if the DTEK 60 does not come to fruition I will probably go with the Pixel/Google phone. At any rate, if the DTEK 60 is released, it will probably be my last BlackBerry phone purchase. :( :cant-watch:   :crying:
Stay strong!
Don't let me get to you... LOL
I actually agree that the Mercury might sell, by BB standards, quite well. There would definitely be a market... Stretching from the PKB-diehards to folk like me who would buy it out of nostalgic fondness for it being the last of its kind.
That said, I remain convinced that Chen isn't going to spend (probably a lot of) BB's money in building the Mercury to sentimentally pander to the few thousand fans who would buy one.
I do like Chen, as I've previously mentioned, but I've never seen him as soft or fluffy, or as someone willing to make a bad business decision for sentimental reasons. How about you ... ? ;)
Consumers would rather have a phone that explodes and potentially causes bodily harm than a BlackBerry...
No, he definitely isn't one that waxes nostalgic, and certainly isn't afraid to speak out, even if it's a mixed signal, lol. I'm beginning to believe he's past the point of caring about handsets and now he's just messing with our minds...
But yeah, I do think Mercury would do well by modern BlackBerry standards, and probably would get good press if it's properly built. Kinda like Douglas Adams' "Last Chance To See" . After all, BlackBerry devices have become an endangered species. :)
Let's talk table stakes - simply the money you need to put in to even compete - this is what google is reported to have done to promote the Pixel and Pixel XL:
Google goes all in on Pixel advertising with $3.2 million spending in just two days | PocketnowHow aggressive? To the tune of $3.2 million reportedly spent on TV ads alone within 48 hours of the two phones’ launches, and “hundreds of millions more” in the months to come.
I would be amazed if BBRY has spend$3.2 million in total promoting phones in the last year.
I've started seeing commercials already and they're pretty "eh". There's nothing in the commercial that shows off any key features that would differentiate it from any other phone: (This is the web version, which is longer than what's aired.)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6pxIcH_0MH0
And then it's only available at Verizon in the U.S.... Way to confuse people who may get excited over this phone. People expect it to be available with whatever carrier they're using. Misfire?
There is no DTEK60 to buy as of now. BlackBerry hasn't published the details on their own website.
RedBerry Passport /10.3.2.2876 / Telus
That's the front facing bit - behind the scenes, some of this money will be provided to the carrier (depending on country) to cross-promote the device. The more money you put at it (including POS displays) the more the carrier promotes the device.
So what's the plan? If BBRY isn't going to provide that money to carriers - how does it compete?
This could be a marketing windfall for someone but who? I'd love to think BlackBerry but they have nothing on par to offer. And if they did, having ready units is a whole other issue entirely. For anyone to capitalize on samsung's issues they'd probably need to partner with a carrier. And offer up some ridiculous device free or nearly free when you turn in your note7 and accept a two year agreement. That said, though they'd better have more to offer over those two years to keep their customers. BlackBerry just is not swift enough to make any of that happen. Bb10 was pushed back several times before it's release. All phones were never available on all carriers. Just getting updates takes an eternity. And the D60 is coming but so is............

Apple has the biggest treasure chest to be able to offer a trade in deal. But they may not have the inventory ready. I'm sure they would need time to ramp up production by which point it may be too late.
Especially considering that most people are locked to plans with their carriers and want to buy their next phone at the "subsidized" price, not at full retail.
